Rajya Sabha MP and former deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma has called on the government to introduce gender-neutral laws to reform domestic violence legislation. During his address in the Rajya Sabha, Sharma emphasized the importance of providing equal protection to all individuals, irrespective of gender, to uphold fairness and justice in society.
Sharma shared alarming data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), showing that 72% of suicides in India in 2022 were by men, with family issues being a major cause. While he praised existing laws protecting women from domestic violence, he stressed that men often lack similar legal safeguards. He cited the tragic case of Atul Subhash from Bihar, who died by suicide after being falsely accused and harassed.
Sharma proposed making domestic violence laws gender-neutral to protect both men and women from abuse and false accusations. He also called for strict action against those who misuse legal provisions.
The President of Purush Aayog NGO met Sharma in Delhi, praising his bold stance on gender equality and his efforts to address the rising male suicide rate. Sharma’s call reflects a growing demand for legal reforms to promote fairness and justice for all.
